The excavation was conducted ahead of work to expand the railway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. The researchers found the statues neatly placed, with their faces down.
One of the statues had a Greek inscription with the name Lycurgus. The researchers believe the statues were part of an important structure or a luxurious house in the area. It is still unclear why they were hidden inside the pit.
This discovery is rare and special. Now the statues will undergo cleaning, preservation, and study. Later, the researchers will transfer them to the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv.
