He suffered from a heart condition that developed after not receiving timely treatment for a sore throat. His father said that the Israeli and Zambian doctors helped save his life.
The goal of the Israeli team is not only to operate on children. The doctors are also teaching local teams to perform the surgeries independently. This way, Zambia will not need to send every child for treatment in another country.
One doctor from Zambia has been studying in Israel for six years. When he returns to his country next year, he will be the second pediatric heart surgeon in Zambia. Another doctor from Zambia completed a similar program in Israel in 2024 and became the first pediatric heart surgeon in the country.
The team also brought a new machine to the hospital that assists the heart and lungs during surgery. The machine cost approximately $200,000. It is the second machine of its kind in all of Zambia.
The Israeli organization has treated approximately 8,500 children from 75 countries to date. It has also trained more than 160 doctors and nurses, mainly from African countries.
