Justice in Djerba: Prison sentences for those involved in the synagogue attack in Tunisia

A court in Tunisia sentenced those involved in the synagogue attack in the city of Djerba to prison terms.

The attack took place in May 2023, on Lag BaOmer.

A terrorist, a member of the national guard, shot his colleague and took his weapon. Afterward, he arrived at the synagogue and opened fire. Five people were killed. Two of them were Jewish. Two Tunisian security personnel were also killed. Six were injured. Security forces neutralized the terrorist at the scene of the attack.

Now, the court has punished people who were connected to the attack. Some assisted the terrorist. Some failed to report information they had. They received sentences ranging from three to 15 years in prison.

The Jewish community in Tunisia is very small. Most members of the community live in Djerba. The attack shocked the community and Jews around the world. The verdict is an important step in the fight against terrorism.
