Macron at the UN: Hamas 'never operated' in the West Bank

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke yesterday at the UN General Assembly in New York.

In his speech, he addressed the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, criticizing Israeli policy in the region.

Macron claimed that Hamas 'never caused trouble' in the West Bank.

He also said that settlement construction and violence in the area harm the chances of establishing a Palestinian state.

However, Hamas has operated in the West Bank even in the past year. In March, the Shin Bet uncovered a cell of ten Palestinians from Samaria associated with Hamas. According to the Shin Bet, the cell carried out explosive attacks and planned additional attacks.

Just this week, Netanel Shkaron was murdered in a shooting attack in Binyamin. The Israeli security establishment identified the attacker as a Hamas operative; Hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility for it. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Macron's statement, saying his claim is disconnected from reality.
