Nobel Prize laureate Ada Yonath passed away

Professor Ada Yonath passed away at the age of 87.

Yonath was one of Israel's leading scientists and worked at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

In 2009, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

She studied the ribosome – a tiny component of the cell that produces proteins. Her research helped to understand how antibiotics work and how bacteria develop resistance to them.

Yonath was born to a poor family in Jerusalem. Many scientists thought her research would fail, but she did not give up. For decades, she paved new paths in science and became an inspiration in Israel and around the world.
